Top considerations before tackling a DIY bathroom project

If you are planning to sell your home this spring or just simply plan on making some updates to your own home this year, the bathrooms in a home are a main make or break decision maker that buyers look for in a new home, as well as the place in which homeowners spend a good deal of time in as they get ready for and wind down each day. Parry Custom Homes, a premier Pittsburgh on your lot homebuilder, shares tips on what to be aware of before you tackle your bathroom remodeling project.

One of the first things you need to do before even going to the store to look at items for your bathroom remodel, is to properly layout and space the bathroom and the adjustments or renovations you plan to make.

A far too common mistake when homeowners try to tackle a DIY bathroom project, is underestimating the amount of space in their bathrooms. You may be eager to find great new items for your bathroom, such as new cabinets, sinks, storage, etc. however, you need to be sure you measure and apply what makes sense for the space you have before purchasing anything. Just because something may fit in your bathroom, doesn’t mean it is the right size for the space.

The next thing you need to think about and plan, is where things need to go and what makes sense for room and location. For example, if you are redoing the shower in the bathroom, be sure to leave more than enough room so that shower doors can fully open and close to get in and out of easy. Also, be sure if there are doors in the bathroom, all doors can open without bumping into anything.

Then there are smaller things to consider, such as the number of outlets and the location of those outlets. For example, you will want to have outlets by the sink so that you could plug in hair dryers, lights and so on. You also need to be sure to position things like towel and toilet paper holders at the right height and location.

The next thing you want to do is be sire not to choose the wrong materials for your bathroom. For example, be sure to only select materials that can stand up to harsh cleaners, as well as the moisture that you will run into in a bathroom space. Do not go with any porous materials that will retain moisture and cause hidden mold to grow over time.

Another item on your list you will need to be sure is at the top of your list, is proper ventilation for your bathroom. If you forget this step or don’t allow for proper ventilation, your bathroom can end up with mold, mildew and other costly problems as time goes on. It is also very uncomfortable to be in a bathroom that has poor ventilation. One small but powerful thing to do is be sure to install a quality ventilation fan. These can typically cover any size bathroom and will do wonders in keeping any mold or mildew at bay.

Once you have these items in place, be sure to think about your bathroom lighting. While this often falls as one of the last items on a bathroom to-do list, as you very well may know poor bathroom lighting can cause major issues. No one wants to have to get ready in a dimly lit bathroom, so be sure to install the correct type of lighting as well as the correct amount of lighting to your liking.

Lastly, don’t let storage fall by the wayside. Especially if you are selling your home, a major downfall of buyers losing interest in a home is if there is little to no storage in the bathrooms. Be sure to consider things like toiletry, towels, paper products and so on that most homeowners like to keep in their bathrooms and want to have room for.

These simple tips will give you the best chance at a great DIY bathroom project!
