Buying a home and getting married this spring?

Posted on May 27, 2016 by Justin

There is no coincidence that spring time seems to be the peak of both wedding announcements and moving announcements that fill the front of your fridge with reminders. Whether you are going through it currently or have already been through it, chances are when you come to the time in your life where you are planning a wedding, buying a place to live together is naturally the next step that either comes right before or after you walk down the aisle. Parry Custom Homes, a premier Pittsburgh on your lot builder, shares tips for those who find themselves in this situation this spring.

Proper planning and good communication will be the key to remaining happily ever after both before and after walking down the aisle, when you have both a wedding to plan and a house to buy. In general, talks of weddings often bring couples to the conversation of if they should buy or rent post-wedding.

A lot of engaged couples find themselves on different pages as their partners when it comes down to the budget of a home and what the needs and wants of a home would be for them. This is where a Realtor can step in and help sort out the details of what you want and what you need, combined.

It is a helpful idea for couples to each write out their top three wish list items in a new home, so they can each make sure they get the big things that are important to them and compromise on other things that may not be as important to them.

Then, it is good for a couple either with a realtor or on their own to look and see what items on their wish lists they can afford and what items may not be realistic within their budget.

It is also a good idea to think about your home in the future as well, to make sure you get the right size and functionality you need if you plan on having kids within the first few years of getting married.

Realtors can also help couples look at different aspects of possible homes and show them where they could add value and what to expect to get back out of the home in the next five years.

Since the stress of planning a wedding and purchasing a home are bound to bring some disagreements, here are some tips on how to best handle this situation:

First, take inventory of what each person has for the new home.

Second, determine how to handle each item. If you have two coffee makers, two sofas or whatever it may be, decide before you move what you are going to do with everything that is double that you don’t need in your new home. It will also help you determine how much space you will need in a new home.

Lastly, create a plan for moving day so arguments can be avoided and you are both on the same page.
