Top considerations before tackling a DIY bathroom project

Categories: Pittsburgh home builders, Pittsburgh New Home Builder, Pittsburgh on your lot builder | Posted: February 7, 2020 | Comments Off on Top considerations before tackling a DIY bathroom project

If you are planning to sell your home this spring or just simply plan on making some updates to your own home this year, the bathrooms in a home are a main make or break decision maker that buyers look for in a new home, as well as the place in which homeowners spend a good deal of time in as they get ready for and wind down each day. Parry Custom Homes, a premier Pittsburgh on your lot homebuilder, shares tips on what to be aware of before you tackle your bathroom remodeling project.

One of the first things you need to do before even going to the store to look at items for your bathroom remodel, is to properly layout and space the bathroom and the adjustments or renovations you plan to make.

A far too common mistake when homeowners try to tackle a DIY bathroom project, is underestimating the amount of space in their bathrooms. You may be eager to find great new items for your bathroom, such as new cabinets, sinks, storage, etc. however, you need to be sure you measure and apply what makes sense for the space you have before purchasing anything. Just because something may fit in your bathroom, doesn’t mean it is the right size for the space.

The next thing you need to think about and plan, is where things need to go and what makes sense for room and location. For example, if you are redoing the shower in the bathroom, be sure to leave more than enough room so that shower doors can fully open and close to get in and out of easy. Also, be sure if there are doors in the bathroom, all doors can open without bumping into anything.

Then there are smaller things to consider, such as the number of outlets and the location of those outlets. For example, you will want to have outlets by the sink so that you could plug in hair dryers, lights and so on. You also need to be sure to position things like towel and toilet paper holders at the right height and location.

The next thing you want to do is be sire not to choose the wrong materials for your bathroom. For example, be sure to only select materials that can stand up to harsh cleaners, as well as the moisture that you will run into in a bathroom space. Do not go with any porous materials that will retain moisture and cause hidden mold to grow over time.

Another item on your list you will need to be sure is at the top of your list, is proper ventilation for your bathroom. If you forget this step or don’t allow for proper ventilation, your bathroom can end up with mold, mildew and other costly problems as time goes on. It is also very uncomfortable to be in a bathroom that has poor ventilation. One small but powerful thing to do is be sure to install a quality ventilation fan. These can typically cover any size bathroom and will do wonders in keeping any mold or mildew at bay.

Once you have these items in place, be sure to think about your bathroom lighting. While this often falls as one of the last items on a bathroom to-do list, as you very well may know poor bathroom lighting can cause major issues. No one wants to have to get ready in a dimly lit bathroom, so be sure to install the correct type of lighting as well as the correct amount of lighting to your liking.

Lastly, don’t let storage fall by the wayside. Especially if you are selling your home, a major downfall of buyers losing interest in a home is if there is little to no storage in the bathrooms. Be sure to consider things like toiletry, towels, paper products and so on that most homeowners like to keep in their bathrooms and want to have room for.

These simple tips will give you the best chance at a great DIY bathroom project!

8 smart things to do with money in your 30’s

As a new year approaches, many people find themselves thinking about areas in their life they would like to improve on for the new year. For many it may be to exercise more, lose some weight, or do more reading and less screen time. If you are in your 30’s or nearing them, have you considered making it a goal to focus on what you do with your money? If you’re looking for a Pittsburgh new new homebuilder, chances are you should read on to make sure your money is going where it should. Parry Custom Homes has some great tips for financial advice from TIME for those in their 30’s.

Normally financial advice is given to college or post-college students as they enter their careers. However, by the time most hit their 30’s, chances are they are at a more secure position financially than in their 20’s.

When you are no longer living from paycheck to paycheck, what are the best things to be doing with your leftover money? According to Solari Financial Planning, making savings goals a priority is first. The 30’s tend to be a time where you will need extra savings as you embark on a new home, kids and a car.

Mint and You Need A Budget are two great online tools that allow you to create savings goals and check your progress. If you are planning to buy a new home, it is ideal to have 20% to put down towards that new home. If you don’t have the 20%, you will have to pay for private mortgage insurance (PMI), which can add to your monthly payment for your new home.

It is best to take a look at how much you need to save to put down 20% and then see how to make sure you’re buying a home you can afford.

Another shocking figure if you are planning to have children- the average cost to raise a child is $245,000 and that doesn’t include college expenses. The best way to prepare yourself for these expenses is to start setting aside money as soon as possible.

Insurance in general such as life, heath, home and disability often gets put on the back burner for savings but it is very important to make this a part of your plans to protect not only yourself, but your families’ well-being as well.

If you take all of these tips into consideration, you will be well prepared to take on your 30’s this New Year and for many years to come!

Outdoor Kitchen Design For Your Parry Home

Categories: Pittsburgh New Home Builder | Posted: April 19, 2019 | Comments Off on Outdoor Kitchen Design For Your Parry Home

Outdoor kitchens are a feature that continues to grow as a popular trend among homeowners. More people are turning to their backyards as retreats, creating a space that is the gathering place for their family and friends. An outdoor kitchen can extend your Parry home’s living area, making the space more functional. Just like the kitchen inside your Parry home, there are guidelines to outdoor kitchen design. If you’re in the market for a Pittsburgh new homebuilder to help make home dreams like this come true, you’ve come to the right place!

The outdoor kitchen of your Parry home has different zones, a cold, hot, wet and dry zone. They must all work together in proper proximity of each other.

There are two different types of outdoor kitchens available for your Parry home, satellite or independent. A satellite kitchen relies on the indoor kitchen for most of the prep work and refrigeration. An independent kitchen features the same functional zones as the indoor kitchen of your home.

The outdoor kitchen to your Parry home has to be easy to care for and to clean. Choose materials that are grease and stain resistant and suited for the outdoor elements of Pittsburg.

Make sure to use finishes and materials that are a complement your home. If the kitchen is against the house, create architectural transition. If the kitchen is located away from the house, think about the sight lines of your home and design the kitchen as a visible destination.

Make sure to account for gas line, electricity and water lines that are sufficient enough to supply all your usage for outside your home.

Make lighting a primary consideration for the outdoor space of your home. The appropriate amount of task light is a necessity for cooking by after dark. Ambient lighting helps illuminate the kitchen, dining and living space outside your home and creates drama throughout the entire area. Make sure that any pathways or stairs are well lit also.

Audio and video entertainment is an important consideration for your outdoor space. You may even want to incorporate an area for a television, just make sure to account for the power source and cables.

Don’t forget to also take into account the outdoor elements such as the movement of the sun and wind direction. The smoke from the grill planned too close to the dining area could propose a problem. Or trying to watch television with the sun setting in the background could be impossible. Think of the slope of the countertops and ground to prevent rainwater from pooling. Also the material that are being used and how they will hold up to the prolonged exposure to the sun and other outdoor elements you will endure in Pittsburg.

By planning ahead and making a lay out for the outdoor kitchen of your Parry home, will be helpful in the executing of a successful outdoor kitchen design that you can enjoy this summer and for many years to come!

Steps To Save For A Down Payment

Categories: Homeowner Tips, Pittsburgh New Home Builder, Pittsburgh on your lot builder | Posted: September 14, 2015 | Comments Off on Steps To Save For A Down Payment

Saving for a down payment

Saving for a down payment

Many twenty-something’s now find themselves searching for their first home, due to the fact that renting has become just as high, if not higher, than mortgages in many states. If you find yourself in this same scenario in looking for a Pittsburgh new home builder or know someone who is, Parry Custom Homes has some great tips for how to save up for a down payment.

Saving for a down payment on a new home may seem like a daunting or impossible task, but with the proper planning and smart decisions, you can have a down payment saved sooner than you might think.

First, the minimum down payment for a new home will depend on your financing and might be lower than you anticipate. The best first step to take is to meet with a loan officer to determine the down payment amount you will need in order to purchase your first home. Some down payments can be very doable, depending on the factors of your loan. Here are the best ways to plan out and save for that down payment amount.

The very first step you should take when saving for a loan is to work with a loan officer to clean up and credit issues you might have. Your credit will determine your purchasing power, so you want it to be in the best shape it possibly can before you start looking at homes and shopping for a home loan.

Once your credit is in place or is going in the right direction, then establish what your new home price will be and what you can realistically afford. Once you know your purchase price, you can calculate the down payment number you will need to save towards.

Next, set a goal and a deadline to stay on track with monthly savings to keep you motivated. Then, start saving! It is easiest to create a separate savings account for your down payment. You will be less temped to spend if the money is s not among the accounts you access regularly.

It is also best to save automatically. This means, with each paycheck the first thing you do is put the money you have dedicated towards savings directly into that savings account you created.

Lastly, see how you can lower your monthly expenses. By cutting back or eliminating monthly expenses you don’t need, you can free up that money for savings.

How To Choose A Good Carpet For Your Parry Home

Categories: New Homes in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh New Home Builder | Posted: March 7, 2014 | Comments Off on How To Choose A Good Carpet For Your Parry Home

Pittsburgh new homeTextured Plush, Saxony and Berber carpets are just a few choices that you have to choose from when selecting carpet for your new home in Pittsburgh.  There are carpets that can be installed wall-to-wall, carpet that can be cut to size with bound edges and carpet squares.  So how do you choose a good carpet for your new Parry home?  Let’s look at some tips about selecting the right carpeting for your new home.

How much traffic will you have on the carpet?  If you plan to put a carpet in the bedroom, then it won’t have as much traffic as a carpet in the living room.

Stain resistance.  This is something to think about with any carpet, especially carpets that are going to be used in a dining room or play room where there will be a steady stream of food or possibilities for spills.

Carpet Rating.  Indoor carpeting is normally rated on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest rating.  Carpets with a four and five rating are considered the best for heavy traffic areas.

Consider wool carpet.  Wool is the highest quality of carpet you can buy for your Parry home.  Wool carpets are very expensive, but greatly out perform any other man made carpet and is naturally flame resistant.

Man made carpets would be the best choice for heavy traffic.  If you will have a high traffic area in your Parry home, then nylon would be an ideal choice due to its durability.  Nylon is stain resistant as well and repels mildew.  Polyester is another good carpet as it is easy to clean and repels water based stains.  Polyester is known for the look and feel of wool, although it is much less expensive than wool.

Color consideration.  Light colored carpets create an effect of a larger space, although they do tend to show stains more easily.  Dark carpets on the other hand tend to absorb light, giving your Parry room a cozy feeling.  Neutral colors are always a safer choice for the carpet color in your Parry home.

The carpeting you choose for your Parry home is an investment.  Purchase the highest grade that your budget will allow.
