Myths about millennials and ownership

Categories: Homeowner News, Pittsburgh on your lot builder | Posted: March 27, 2017 | Comments Off on Myths about millennials and ownership

When it comes to the millennial generation, many have assumptions made up in their head of what a typical millennials financial choices are. However, how do you know what is primarily false or true with this generation? Parry Custom Homes, a premier Pittsburgh on your lot builder, shares feedback from a recent article by CNBC explored this generation more and the financial choices they are making that may surprise you.

The study found that the aspirations of millennials and past generations remain the same, it is just that it might take the millennial generation longer to be able to afford the same things as their previous generations.

Successful companies such as Netflix, Uber and Spotify often lead people to believe that the future is more about renting than owning. However, when it comes to big purchases that doesn’t seem to be the case with millennials as most people might assume.

Currently about 53% of millennials own their own home and an overwhelming 88% of millennials aspire too when they can financially afford it. Although the sharing economy is thriving, millennials still plan to and when they can afford too, purchase their homes and cars opposed to renting or leasing them in the vast majority.

Another myth when it comes to millennials is that they are afraid to put down roots. This was also found to not be true, as millennials are buying homes in both rural and metropolitan areas when they have the financial means to do so.

Although this generation may be transitional when it comes to what they choose to purchase and their consumer preferences, the core big ticket items such as a car and a home are things that they are still wanting to purchase and can when they have the financial means to do so.

However, something that may be higher than in past generations is that a good portion of millennial homebuyers will buy a home to rent it or be a landlord, opposed to just living in the home as the sole purpose of purchasing it. The popular Airbnb craze can be partially to blame, as they see their home as an opportunity to make money as well.

So, if you are a millennial in the market for a new home know that you are not alone. And if you are an older generation shopping for a new home, know that you may compete against or live next to a millennial in your next home purchase!

How to detox your bedroom

Categories: Homeowner Tips, Pittsburgh custom homes | Posted: March 13, 2017 | Comments Off on How to detox your bedroom

Spring is on our doorstep and with the warmer temperatures often comes the time of year where people want to focus on getting in shape for summer. While you may be used to hearing about detoxing your body and the health benefits associated with that, have you ever considered detoxing your bedroom? Parry Custom Homes, a premier homebuilder for Pittsburgh custom homes, shares how you can detox your bedroom for the new spring season.

Your bedroom is your haven and a place you spend an average of 200,000 hours of your life! So, you want the place you go to rejuvenate yourself each night to not only be comfortable but also to be clean.

There are a few areas of your bedroom that if you don’t pay attention too and clean often, can easily get germy and collect dust very fast. If you disinfect these areas often, you can help prevent catching a cold while you catch up on your Z’s!

These are the four items in your home you will want to focus your detoxing efforts on:

  1. Most people are used to washing their bedsheets and linens on a weekly basis, but what about your pillows? Pillows often get neglected and if you don’t wash them regularly, your pillows can be the gatekeepers of germs and bacteria right under your nose without you even realizing it.

So how is best to clean your pillow? You will first want to make sure that your pillow can be thrown in the washing machine. If the pillow isn’t machine washable, don’t attempt to wash it anyways as it will most likely explode in the washing machine.

You will want to put two pillows in the washing machine at a time. This will allow the machine to stay balanced as it spins. Use a mind liquid detergent, as a powder detergent will leave residue on your pillows.

Then, run your pillows through the rinse cycle twice to make sure the detergent is out of the pillow. Lastly, throw the pillows in the dryer and add in 2 or 3 tennis balls that are wrapped in socks. This will help you fluff your pillows without the work!

  1. The next place in your room you will want to keep an eye out to keep clean will be the curtains in your room, if you have them. The best way to keep mold out of your bedroom is to open your shades and let the sunshine overpower any mold that may be growing in your bedroom. The sun helps remove excess moisture that make be hanging out. Get in the rhythm of opening your curtains in the morning and let the sun shine in all day long.

As an added bonus, pull back your duvet cover and let the sun beam down on your pillows and sheets as well.

  1. The paint in your room will be the next area you want to check out and even consider putting a fresh new coat up for spring. If the paint in your bedroom is not a low or non-VOC paint, purchase one that is and give your bedroom a nice new coat of much healthier paint to be in your atmosphere. Paint with VOCs, also known as volatile organic compounds, causes a big source of indoor air pollution and even is linked to risks of cancer, liver and kidney damage.
  1. Lastly, if you have trouble falling asleep at night try taking a break from electronics at least an hour before you hit the hay. Electronics can disrupt your natural sleep habits, so limiting any screen time with any device an hour before bed can have you drifting off to sleep much quicker and easier.

Tips for living alone safely

Categories: Homeowner Tips, Pittsburgh on your lot builder | Posted: March 3, 2017 | Comments Off on Tips for living alone safely

If you find yourself living alone whether it be all the time or just a lot of the time if you have a spouse that travels, there are precautions you should put in place to keep yourself safe in your home. Parry Custom Homes, a premier Pittsburgh on your lot builder, shares safety tips for yourself or a loved one who may be living at home alone.

The first thing that should be on your radar for home and personal safety when living alone, is to address what your lighting situation is. Outdoor lighting plays a huge role when it comes to deterring intruders or even just people snooping around that you don’t need around your home.

It is good to not have your home lit up 24 hours a day, but be sure to have lights on timers during the evening hours when you might not be home. Leaving the lights on all day can attract intruders. Having lights on a timer will allow for a normal pattern of activity and prevent your home from being all dark when you are not there.

Another good tip is to keep additional lights on in your home, such as a bedroom or two to give the allusion you are not home alone. So, consider putting a few lamps on timers in different rooms in your home. This can make it seem like you have a fuller house, even when it is just you inside.

Most people know about outdoor light sensors that will turn on a light when someone motions in front of it. These are great to have on the outside of your home. However, you can get even more creative with a TV light simulator. This is a device that is no bigger than a cup of coffee and mimics the lights produced by an HDTV. So, when you are upstairs in your home it can look like someone is downstairs watching TV, without having to have the TV on.

If you happen to be a woman living alone, it is great to put up deterrents around your home as well. These can be simple things like a size 13 men’s work boot outside the front of your home, or a giant dog water dish. It is also a good idea to not be home alone if you can, when you have someone coming over to repair your home. If you know you have someone coming to your home to do any type of repair or maintenance, invite a friend over to be there as well if you can so you do not have to be alone or look like you live alone.

Another tip to be sure and do is to change the locks when you move into a new home. Even better, replace it with a lock that also has a deadbolt as well as a key to lock and unlock. Sure turning a lock is more convenient, but if there are windows next to your lock on the inside, it just takes someone breaking the window and turning the lock for them to get in.

There is a way you can make your windows more secure as well. While putting bars in front of them is a tad extreme (and can also cause a safety risk if there is a fire), putting glass protection film on the windows can disperse the shock wave of a broken window if anyone tries to break in through it.

If you don’t have a security system and don’t have the desire to pay for one, fake the look of having one outside your home. Put up signage on your front door window or get one of those front yard signs of a security company to put by the front door. Different types of signs like “Beware of dog” or things to that nature, can also be deterrents.

Especially if you move into a new home, get to know any neighbors you have around you. Not only will this help you get introduced into your new neighborhood, but also give you people to contact in case of emergency and when you get comfortable enough, even ask them to keep an eye on your home when you are both at home or away.

Lastly, be sure you become aware of your surroundings and keep your nose out of your phone when you are coming and going from your home. Just paying attention to your surroundings when you are out or about or coming and going from your home, can save you a great deal of problems that you could run into. People who are distracted are the primary people who are targeted by those who are out and looking for victims, in any scenario.

Use these simple tips for yourself or share them with someone you may know who lives alone all the time or even is alone frequently. It never hurts to extra rules of caution to live by.
